“Mexican President Rejects Trump’s ‘Unjust’ Tariff Policy, Calls it a ‘Kick in the Foot’
Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her opposition to the tariff policy announced by US President, Donald Trump, during a press conference on Tuesday. According to Sheinbaum, the tariff policy is “unjust” and affects the balance of trade between the two countries, which has been favorable to the United States.
Sheinbaum pointed out that the US exports more to Mexico than Mexico exports to the US, with a difference of almost $6.897 million. Therefore, she concluded, the US has a favorable trade balance with Mexico.
The Mexican Economy Minister, Ebrard, also expressed his opposition to the tariff policy, describing it as a “misguided idea” and a “kick in the foot”. Ebrard explained that Mexico has been working on different alternatives to the proposed tariffs and is prepared to present them to the US authorities.
Trump has defended the tariff policy, saying that it will affect “everybody”, but Sheinbaum and Ebrard are confident that their arguments will have an impact on the US government.
On February 28, Sheinbaum was able to suspend the tariffs by reaching agreements on security and migration policies with Trump.
